Daniel Hafner (AT)

Daniel Hafner, born in Austria 1979, studied Digital media and art in public space at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He lives and works in Vienna since 2005.

“It is impossible to pin Daniel Hafner down to a single medium. He employs many forms of artistic expression,varying between video, photography, new media and music. Visual, acoustic and physical perception is the experimental field he explores, exploiting technical opportunities remote from hi-tech is the method he uses and these are the parameters of his art. Whether it’s an audio CD called 30 Möglichkeiten eine Wahlnuss zu knacken (thirty ways of cracking a walnut) or the fine linear screen of the Morphotransformationen – Hafner’s works follow a conceptual approach that is not devoid of a certain irony and always leads to a result of that can be perceived with the sense.

In the series of works Rain-Momentums, Hafner spreads pigment and pulverized binders on a support and holds the letter out in the rain for a moment or two. The raindrops thus become both a diluting agent and pictorial motif. After drying and the removal of the pigment, an unbounded ornamentation is left on the canvas that varies in proportion to the heaviness of the rain and looks different every time. The exact moment of the genesis and meteorological data such as humidity, temperature and wind speed, which Hafner notes meticulously on the back, are included in the title of the piece – they are an essential component of the work and underline the conceptual starting point.

Another work,Optoshaker, testifies to the artist’s ability to notice the small phenomena of everyday live and turn them into art. In the exhibition, Hafner asks visitors to place their chins in a device and look at a computer image of stones in clear water in a riverbed. The slight vibration transmitted to the skull by the appliance is comparable to that of an electric toothbrush. It is sufficient to set the optics in vibration, causing the water to move in gentle waves.” UMJ-Kunsthaus Graz

Daniel is took part on the residency in Košice from April until June 2014. The residency was part of cooperation with Culture Department of the Styrian Government in Graz, Austria.

Daniel Hafner, narodený v Rakúsku v roku 1979, študoval od roku 2005 Digitálne média a umenie vo verejnom priestore na Akadémii krásnych umení vo Viedni.

“Prisúdiť Danielovi Hafnerovi jediné médium je nemožné. Zaoberá sa mnohými formami umeleckého prejavu, pohybujúc sa medzi videom, fotografiou, novými médiami a hudbou. Vizuálne, akustické a fyzické vnímanie sú experimentálne prvky, ktoré skúma, využívajúc technické možnosti vzdialené hi-tech – je to metóda, ktorú využíva,a zároveň sú to parametre jeho umenia. Či už je to audio CD s názvom 30 Möglichkeiten eine Wahlnuss zu knacken (30 spôsobov ako rozbiť orech) alebo tenká lineárna obrazovka Morphotransformationen – Hafnerovo dielo nasleduje konceptuálny prístup, ktorému však nechýba istá irónia a vždy vedie k výsledku, ktorý je možno vnímať zmyslami.

V sérii prác Rain-Momentums, Hafner umiestňuje farbivo a rozdrvené spojivo na podložku, ktorú na chvíľu drží v daždi. Dažďové kvapky sa tak stávajú zrieďovacím prvkom a obrázkovým motívom. Po uschnutí a odstránení farbiva, ostáva na plátne neuzavretá ornamentika, ktorá sa mení v závislosti od ťažkosti dažďa a vyzerá vždy odlišne. Presný moment genézy a meteorologických údajov, ako je vlhkosť, teplota, a rýchlosť vetra, ktoré Hafner úzkostlivo zaznamenáva na zadnú stranu, sú zahrnuté v názve diela – sú totiž základným komponentom diela a podčiarkujú konceptuálny počiatočný bod.

Ďalšie dielo, Optoshaker, dokazuje umelcovu schopnosť zaznamenávať drobné úkazy každodenného života a premeniť ich na umenie. Na výstave Hafner žiada návštevníkov, aby si priložili bradu k prístroju a pozerali sa na počítačový obrázok zobrazujúci kamene v čistej vode riečiska. Jemné vibrácie prenesené týmto zariadením do lebky sa dajú porovnať s tými, ktoré vytvára zubná kefka. Je to však dosť na vytvorenie vibrácii v optike, ktoré spôsobujú, že sa voda pohybuje v jemných vlnách.”  UMJ-Kunsthaus Graz

Daniel sa práve zúčastňuje na rezidenčnom pobyte v Košiciach, v mesiacoch apríl, máj a jún. Rezidencia je súčasťou spolupráce s Culture Department of the Styrian Government v rakúskom Grazi.
