Claire Waffel (GER)

Berlin-based artist Claire Waffel (1978) studied an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication and a BA in Media Studies and French the University of East Anglia in Norwich. She works with the media of installation, video, photography, and collage examining their potential to transport and illustrate memory and time. “I am especially interested in how various time structures, which can be found simultaneously or come together in a person, place or architecture can be made visible”, says Claire.

During her three-month residency in Košice she discovered the symptomatic effect in a particular architectural element – a lowered prefabricated ceiling that hides the ornamental religious cupola in the former Neolog synagogue, a synagogue converted into the House of Arts under Communism. Her site-specific installation in the gallery connected this to corresponding architectural features in a recently reconstructed gallery ceiling. The result of her work illustrates the changing relationship between topography and identity in the post-communist Slovakia. Claire’s residency was made possible thanks to generous support of Goethe Institute Bratislava.
