Christoph Reiserer: turnaround

Christoph Reiserer strávil tri mesiace na K.A.I.R. rezidenčnom pobyte v Košiciach (marec – jún 2016). Počas rezidencie pacoval na projekte zameranom na prepájanie vedy a umenia. Rôzne spôsoby nazerania na túto tému spojil do performance s názvom „turnaround“.

Performance je plná protikladov, ktoré sú prepojené v jednom dobre fungujúcom systéme. Na jednej strane humanoidné roboty interagujú s publikom, reagujú na emócie návštevníkov. Na druhej strane, živí hudobníci reagujú na rytmus vytvorený počítačmi, ktoré s pomocou kamier kontrolujú zvuk „čítaním“ máp nakreslených na vinylových nahrávkach. Všetko sa mení s otáčaním máp na vinylových platniach, ktorých centrálnym bodom sú Košice. 
Ľudia si často myslia, že súčasná veda pozná všetky odpovede. Ale aj ľudia, ktorí nie sú vedcami by mali rozmýšľať o svete vo väčšej mierke. Vedomosti súčasnej vedy sú obrovské, ale vieme si predstaviť, koľko je pred nami ešte ukrytého? Môžeme urobiť krok späť a nachvíľu sa pozerať na svet inak? Veľké vedecké objavy môžu spôsobiť zvrat vo vedeckom diskurze, ako sa to stalo mnohokrát v histórii a ako sa to stane znova. Pokúsme sa nebyť jediným centrom nášho sveta. Zem sa netočí okolo nás a vesmír sa netočí okolo zeme, alebo?

Christoph Reiserer je skladateľ a multimediálny umelec z Mníchova. Pred tým, než sa stal hudobníkom, študoval muzikológiu a filozofiu v Mníchove a Berlíne. Jeho práca pozostáva zo skladieb pre hudobné divadlo (napr. Pesident Jekyll, 2012) rovnako ako performance vo verejnom priestore (flux2008 na rafte na rieke) a inštalácií (napr. tisch, 2005, vo verejnom priestore).

So svojou performance – inštaláciou Some Work (2010) začal stavať roboty, ktoré interagujú a vystupujú spolu s hudobníkmi. Touto prácou skúma náš vzťah medzi ľudskými bytosťami a strojmi a často vtipným spôsobom poukazuje na schopnosti a nedostatky na obidvoch stranách. Jeho prístroje ukazujú interagujúcim hudobníkom alebo návštevníkom veľa o ich spôsobe myslenia a vyrovnávajú sa so situáciami.

Počas rezidencie Christoph spolupracoval so študentmi z Katedry kybernetiky a umelej inteligencie Technickej univerzity v Košiciach. Rezidenčný pobyt bol podporený Goetheho inštitútom v Bratislave a organizáciou Creative Industry Košice a organizovaný v spolupráci s DIG Gallery.

Christoph Reiserer spent three months at K.A.I.R. residency in Košice (March – June 2016). During the residency, he was working on the project of art and science connection. He looked at this subject from different points of view, which he connects in the performance called “turnaround”.

The performance is full of contraries, which are combined to the one well working system. At the one hand, humanoid robots are interacting with audience, reacting on the emotions of visitors. On the other hand, musicians are playing live and reacting to the rhythm created by the computers which are controlling the sound by reading maps on the vinyl records through cameras. Everything is changing with the maps drawn on vinyl records turning around the point where Košice is the center.
People usually think that modern science knows all answers. But also non-scientists should think about the world in larger scale. The knowledge of the modern science is huge, but can we imagine how much is still hidden for us? Can we step back for a while and look at the world differently? The big discoveries in the science can cause the turnaround in the scientific discourse as it happened many times in the history and as it will happen again. Let´s try not to be the only center of our world. The earth is not turning around us, and the universe is not turning around the earth, is it?

Christoph Reiserer is a composer and multi-media-artist from Munich, Germany. Before he became a musician he studied musicology and philosophy in Munich and Berlin. His work consists of music theater compositions (e. g. President Jekyll, 2012) as well as performances in public space (flux2008 on a raft in a river) and installations (e. g. tisch, 2005, in public space).

With his performance-installation Some Work (2010) he started to build robots which interact and perform together with musicians. With this kind of work he explores the relationship between human beings and machines and shows capabilities and deficits on both sides often in a humorous way. His machines show the interacting musician or visitor a lot about their way of thinking and dealing with situations.

During the residency Christoph Reiserer collaborated with students from Department of Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence from Technical University of Košice. The residency was supported by Goethe – Institut in Bratislava and Creative Industry Košice and organized in cooperation with DIG Gallery.
